Objectives: Since the electronic cigarettes have been developed, the market of electronic cigarettes is steadily increased. In this article, we reviewed the effectiveness and safety of electronic cigarettes to secure the medical and scientific evidences.
Methods: We conducted the rapid systematic review using existing systemtic review articles.
Results: One systematic review article and four original articles were reviewed for the effectiveness of electronic cigarettes. In meta-analysis, nicotine electronic cigarettes seemed to be effective to stop smoking; however the level of evidence is categorized as low. There was no significant difference between nicotine electronic cigarettes and nicotine replacement therapy. In terms of the safety, two systematic review articles were reviewed in this study. Not any study reported serious adverse events related to electronic cigarettes. However, since the methodological problems, relatively few studies and the authors¡¯ conflict of interests, it is hard to regard electronic cigarettes as safe.
Conclusion: To secure the medical and scientific evidence of electronic cigarettes use, long-term follow-up studies with no conflict of interests are needed.
